Our Story

Gary and Linda Sclafani
In September of 1988 while living in Upstate New York and doing itinerant music ministry in the Detroit, Michigan area, God visited us one evening with a vision from Galatians 3:13 which says: “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us — for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree’. In the hours that followed the Lord began to open up His Word revealing to us the “glory of the New Covenant”.

In the weeks that followed while in Columbus, Ohio during our morning devotional time the Lord once again visited us with further understanding of His Covenant and a word about one day pioneering a church with the name “The Promise of Life”, taken from 2 Tim.1:1 (NASB) and 1 Timothy 4:8 (Weymouth). We held this word in our hearts for 18 years, during which time the Lord continued to reveal more of the blessings and provision that the New Covenant has made for us to live victoriously in Christ. Thus, experiencing in full the abundant life that Jesus promised for all believers recorded in the Gospel of John chapter 10.

In May of 1997 we relocated to Ohio to become part of a local church in Columbus in response to a prophetic word given at a minister’s prayer meeting on March 17th in Corning, New York. In the years that followed the Lord continued to periodically speak and remind us of His Covenant and plan and purpose for our lives.

In November of 1998 the Lord directed us to Christian Community Church North and encouraged us to be a part of this local church, and to support its leadership and vision. We served in many capacities at CCCN, including Worship Director and then Pastor of Worship and Evangelism.

During the last months of 2004 the Lord began to stir our hearts afresh for revival in His church and ultimately the world. As we devoted ourselves to prayer and waiting on the Lord, He began to reveal to us more of His heart and vision for His people. This led to a growing burden in our hearts to see his further purposes established in and through us. He once again reminded us of the vision He previously put in our hearts, encouraging us to prepare ourselves as the time was coming for this vision to be fulfilled.

The Lord began to knit our hearts together with a few men of “like precious faith” during casual times of fellowship throughout the first half of 2005. We had all been sensing a growing urgency in our spirits and call to prayer and waiting on the Lord. On August 10th, 2005 we gathered together for the first time to pray for revival in His church. We had no prayer lists or agenda other than to cry out to God to awaken His people from spiritual slumber and create a fresh desire in their hearts for Him. we had no idea what we would experience that night as the glory of the Lord descended upon us in such a profound manner.

The Lord supernaturally revealed to us in a few short hours the reason why He had knit our hearts together and had called us four men together to pray at that time. His purpose became crystal clear as the Holy Spirit spoke to us from His Word sharing His heart with astounding clarity and power. We stood in awe of His holy presence facing the four corners of the tiny basement we had gathered in. The Holy Spirit revealed at that time that what was transpiring in our midst and in our hearts that night was going to reach the four corners of the earth (“For who has despised the day of small things?” Zech. 4:10). From that day on His glory has continued to be made manifest and is increasing as we have humbly walked before our God.

In February of 2006 we were released from CCCN to pursue the further purposes of God for our lives. We began to meet together to worship, pray and share in the ministry of His Word with our entire families. As He continued to lead us forward, He directed us to open up our meeting times to others.

On March 5th, 2006 we held our first Sunday meeting as The Promise of Life in our home in Dublin, Ohio. We continued to meet in various homes for almost a year. We then began to meet weekly in the chapel of the Dublin Community Church as well as from house to house throughout the week. In the summer of 2009 we started meeting on Sundays at the Hilliard YMCA and continue to meet during the week in various homes as the Lord directs. There’s a growing excitement and expectation in Christ in our hearts as He continues to reveal the further purposes of God for The Promise of Life.
